What I do is specify the width in the printer driver as the full width of the paper roll. It's a bit cumbersome.
Let's say I'm printing on 36" wide paper. My actual image is 12"x20" landscape. Let's say I want a 2" border all around. So I'll increase the canvas size in Pshop to 16"x24". When I go to print, I do Print Preview, then Page Setup Select Printer Select the printer I want (I have both a 130 and 3100 connected) In the printer properties, I select roll (working from memory here, the printer is at work), Custom, and set the paper size to 36" wide by 18"" high. Save it, then select OK. Do the other stuff to set the paper etc. Checkmark print preview in the HP dialogue, then OK my way out of that dialogue. The Photoshop Page Setup dialogue should now show the right size paper. OK out of that dialogue. Photoshop's Print Preview should now show my 16x24 image in the 18x36 paper width. If you want to conserve paper, uncheck Center Image and move it over so you have a useful scrap for later. Go through the rest of the printing, and the HP print preview should pop up just before you print. This is the last opportunity to confirm that it's all aligned the way you want, hasn't got rotated 90 degrees, etc. If you're happy, hit OK. Note that you don't really need to spec the canvas size to include that border, because you can move the actual image around to create that 2" border. It's just easier to see the frame in Pshop's Print Preview. AFAIK, the paper size is always the real paper size, don't try to fool the printer because it knows what's loaded. So make your paper size your roll width by whatever you need to make the print, and go from there. HTH.
