HP confirmed that this version of the firmware was bad -- it was truncated causing the flashing of the eprom failed. This explains why I couldn't even get into diagnostic mode to ftp a new version of the firmware.

They did finally send me a new formatter for free (took more than 2 weeks to arrive) -- which worked just fine (although I did have to pay them $40 just to get to a support person)

Now I see there is a new version of the firmware TR12-7.0.3-5. I'm sort of thinking I shouldn't be the first guy on the block to give this one a try.

Has anybody else tried this new version?

Thanks,
John

Stop laughing, it's worth a shot.

I don't even know where this formatter is you guys are talking about.
