Regular hard soap works well (keep it well away from the wheel) and it is invisible
I guess a very soft pencil will also work
I don't find I need it on the nuts
I do use it on the ears and on the string holes in the peg box sides and the string notches on the mouche and bourdon bridges
Its best applied to a slack string and the notches

btw, about strings slipping and all

is it a good idea to use some teflon powder or a soft pencil on the nut, so that the string won't stick and jump while I tune it? I know violinists sometimes use powdered graphite (I don't know if you use that word in English - that's the stuff inside pencils) so that the string can slide freely on the nut...

Thanks, everybody, for all the advice. I think I'm finally getting somewhere.

I've been away from my computer for a while, in fact my PC laptop died. I'm getting a new Macbook soon. It is amazing how internet dependent I've become.

All the best,

Barbara
