And I would worry about using hard soap with gut strings as it's water-based
(water + gut = yuck) although fine with synthetic.
I agree, the slippy stuff should be fine and well away from the wheel :-)

The powdered teflon I have is Neil Brook's "slippy stuff" that lots of people
use to lubricate keys when they get stuck... I of course know enough to keep it
away from the wheel!

btw, about strings slipping and all

is it a good idea to use some teflon powder or a soft pencil on the nut,
so that the string won't stick and jump while I tune it? I know violinists
sometimes use powdered graphite (I don't know if you use that word in English -
that's the stuff inside pencils) so that the string can slide freely on the
nut...

Thanks, everybody, for all the advice. I think I'm finally getting
somewhere.

I've been away from my computer for a while, in fact my PC laptop died.
I'm getting a new Macbook soon. It is amazing how internet dependent I've
become.

        All the best,
