Just a couple of points I noticed when starting to use two straps. The first is the thickness of the end of the strap versus the size of the button. If the former is too thick or the latter too small, the strap can pop off. OK, the waist strap keeps thing from crashing to the ground but it's not a nice experience. I'm sure the better makers allow for this when they choose the button size. I'm another who worries about the strap under method. I feel sure it's going to rip the tailpiece off (it hasn't so far) but maybe the flat back keeps it in the right position so there's little pressure. Hmm, I screwed some eyes into my guitar and banjo to fit straps on (those with the little catch like a dog lead at the end) but I don't know about the HG. Came out in a cold sweat at the thought.

One around the waist as usual but maybe a bit tighter. The second strap with one end on the button at the head end and the other end of the strap on the bottom button below the handle after first threading it through under the first strap. I learnt this method from Isabel Pignol of Dedale. There is film of me using this strap configuration with a flat-back Siorat on my website www.drohne.co.uk . What I like about this set-up is that the instrument sits very snuggly into the players body making you very much at one with the instrument. The traditional method of playing whilst standing can be seen in many pictures of Gaston Riviere and costumed gurdy players. This involves taking the second strap to the lower button via under the tailpiece. I have never felt too happy with this method but all the French traditional players of the last few centuries can't all be wrong. Ok no real problem, except, that I value my gurdies more than money. One strap is very precarious. I know when I was at St.Chartier people played with two straps. Can anyone recommend a safe and comfortable way to play standing up or walking around. JON -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "hurdygurdy" group.
