You could try straplocks, but the ones I've seen are big, ugly, and
expensive. What I have found (though I haven't tried them yet) came
from Home Depot furniture and cabinet fittings (I forget the UK
equivalent to HD, but it isn't hard to find). What I found there was a
packet of 4 connecting bolts in antique brass finish (SKU# 53964,
House-Mates Hardware for Crown Bolt llc, made in China - surprise,
surprise ) for about $9.00. You screw the bolt into one piece of the
furniture, and are supposed to hook on a matching fitting on the other
piece (if you've ever put IKEA furniture together, you'l know what I'm
talking about). These are good and big and hefty and should provide a
solid lock for the buttonhole on a guitar strap.

George Leverett at altarwind.com also sells 'real' brass strap buttons
for $8.00 a pair.
