I had a similar experience 15 minutes before a concert. I was checking my
tuning and the strap I was using (not my standing strap) apparently was not on
all the way and came undone. The gurdy swung down and smacked the ground. I
tried to grab it, but I happened too fast. We didn't realize how much damage
was done until the piece just before intermission when one of keys just fell
apart. Thankfully it was a piece that I was not needed. As soon as we left the
stage I panicked. The first half of the concert I was playing a lot of low G
and D chantrelle pieces. I was the only gurdy with a D. The second half I just
needed my upper G chantrelle. Alden and Cali had a "spare" gurdy with them, so
the rest of the concert was played on an Orca model. Crazy day! I made it
through the concert, but I never want to experience that kind of thing again.

After a disaster in which my new Weichselbaumer tenor ended up in
    pieces on the floor,

Wolfgang installed some very nice strap locks: I'm not sure what
    kind they are, but they

are nice and flat, not clunky, and fit in well with the aesthetics
    of the instrument.

Frankly, with an instrument as large as a Tenor, I wouldn't be
    without them!

What about guitar strap locks? Does anyone on the list use
these? I would think I'd want something like that on my straps
and instrument if I played standing.

Do a Google search on guitar strap lock to see what I'm
          talking about.
