Banten Blames Japan Foundation for Mudflows

Tuesday, 23 June, 2009 | 14:31 WIB

*TEMPO Interactive*, *Jakarta*: Officials in Banten Province have blamed the
mudflows and gas emissions from two wells in Walikukun Village, in Serang
Regency since last week on Japanese NGO, the Japan Foundation.

Head of the Mining Office of Banten Province, Cepi Suwardi said in an inter
institutional meeting the provincial administration had concluded that “as
the party that funded the project the Japan Foundation should be responsible
for the mudflows.”

The Japanese NGO, according to Cepi, has agreed to take measures to contain
the mudflows and control the gas.

The mudflow and gas emissions, which emerged on Saturday last week, have
swamped seven lots of rice fields and sulphuric acid has inundated 10
hectares of rice fields, reminding locals of the Lapindo mudflow disaster.

The Japan Foundation, unlike the consortium of energy companies led by the
Bakrie group related Lapindo Brantas in Sidoarjo, funded the construction of
a community health center and sanitation facility in Walikukun Village.
