There is one person who is going around saying that installing a

We'll still be needed to design backup, security, and
customization.
*NOT* according to the person that was saying it was the *WAVE* of
the future. I took issue with it when the person said it and still do.
If a drag-and-drop installation works, how can you consider it
a loss? Do you think things should be kept more complicated than
necessary just so more of us can have jobs?
The number of customization "jobs" still need to be done after the
"final" job of a SERVPAC (I am NOT saying service pac's are bad) Its
a fact of life that additional work is needed and to say it is a
small effort is IMO untrue and in some cases an outright lie. If a
drag and drop system were to appear, there would always be needed
some tweaking (post installation jobs) that will always be needed.
The person that was espousing the drag and drop was probably
parroting some high level IBMer (guessing here) but it really
belittled the profession, IMO.
Actually, we're almost there. Isn't IBM still offering (for a
fee) the service of "restore these tapes and IPL"?
I have not heard of the service you speak of. But IMO each
installation is different and cannot (generally) be done with a
simple restore. Actually with the virtual DASD such a restore should
really not be needed, if planned well (depending on the complexity).
