Ron, No, I did not mean to imply that BUFSP speeds split processing. A generous bufsp provides better overall performance thus masking whatever hits you may be taking from split processing. Not that I think splits are going to be noticeable in today's environment. I have seen sysprogs take the default here, possibly because the HSM IVP define lacks a bufsp definition. The starter job for HSM has a definition of BUFFERSPACE(530432). I thought string+1 for data was the formula for CICS non-LSR files. Isn't the default for Direct Open 2 data and the rest Index? Getting back to the orig. post, Judy was concerned about the growth of her MCDS which leads me to believe it is a. underallocated or b. she is seeing growth caused by freespace 0,0 which as someone (perhaps you) said would quiet down after a few days. Using 50,50 for freespace elimnates the heartburn caused by the sudden spurt in space used. As always it depends (IBM answer #3) on your shop. In my shop 50,50 would not work as I've got 450K dormant records in the middle of my BCDS and MCDS. Regards, Dave O'Brien
