I have followed this discussion with great interest, as I am still looking for a job. As I probably mentioned in the past, my first choice would be to find a sysprog job in Milwaukee. The thought of moving somewhere and taking a huge pay cut, and then it's not being a permanent job just turns me off. I have decided to look for only reasonably paying jobs if I have to move. I've thought about other taking datacenter jobs, even if they pay half as much as I used to make, if they are in the Milwaukee area.
Also, unless a contract is signed that says if they let you go early, that they will pay you for the rest of the contract, there are no guarantees. I'm sure that most contracts would not have any such clause. I found that out the hard way. My 6 month to a year contract, with a possible option to hire turned out to be 4 months when the z/OS conversion project was done. I got stuck with 2 months rent on a 6 month lease. Actually, that turned out not so bad, as I just finished painting a couple rooms in my house in Milwaukee, and now next week I'll move all my furniture back. I have to pay rent till the end of this month.
