As we've merged companies, our catalog environment has become very mixed. We have catalogs on both SMS & Non-SMS volumes. Of the catalogs on the SMS volumes, some are in a systems dataset SMS pool and some are in standard production pools with lots of VSAM dataset - even VSAM clusters that belong to those catalogs.
The catalogs in the standard production SMS pools also have a standard management class which has auto-backup enabled. Backups occur daily. We've never had a backup related issue, but I've never recovered a catalog from these backups either. Per the redbook "ICF Catalog Backup & Recovery - A Practical Guide", HSM is listed as under the "Backup Utilities" section. I quote: "If the catalog resides on a SMS volume, the mangement class is used to control the backup frequency & the # of backup copies retained. This allows you to define different management classes to achieve your needs for the backup frequency, and the # of backups you want to retain for different catalogs. SMS invokes DFSMShsm, which in turn uses IDCAMS EXPORT to perform the backup. Aliases are included in the backup copy." - any mis-spellings are my own. >From the zOS1.7 "Managing Catalogs" manual: Although a catalog contains entries for SMS-managed data, the catalog itself does not have to be SMS-managed, but it is recommended that catalogs containing entries for SMS-managed data also be SMS-managed As to the problem Kees listed below, I seem to remember something about this from the early days of ICF catalogs, but haven't seen anything more recent. I did a quick check through a couple of the manuals & didn't find anything on this as a restriction, but to be honest I don't have the time available today to do a full blown search. ddk ////////////////////////////////////////////////// >>There used to be (warnings of) problems when mixing ICF catalogs and >>VSAM dataset on the same volumes. >>IIRC there was a possibility of a deadly embrace when clusters from one >>ICF catalog existed on the volume of the other ICF catalog and clusters >>of the second ICF catalog existed on the volume of the first ICF >>catalog. ************************************************************************************** This e-mail message and all attachments transmitted with it may contain legally privileged and/or confidential information intended solely for the use of the addressee(s).
