About JOBLIB and STEPLIB usage EJ's point is of course the conclusive one. A single pointer may be nul or point to one of two libraries. It cannot point to both. This implicit EXOR scheme is what we have; the question whether it is a good one is more complicated. I would not have painted myself into a corner in this way. A pair of pointers, even if one of them were currently always null, would have been a better choice.
