We also use the RESVOL as the base mount point, but then mount ALL of the filesystems starting with the SMPE serviced ROOT, and everything else. Then you have the entire tree available for SMPE maintenance.

And now I must confess that it has been a while since I was working as a sysprog and doing this stuff, and things like z/OSMF and Java complicate it. One solution might be to use /service/mvs/resvol, service/java/resvol, service/zosmf/resvol, etc. And now it's getting uglier...
