I would rather make the provided autogen.sh work by default. A better fix
would be to set the CFLAGS in configure.ac, or to use the compiler warnings
from gnome-common, which I have already worked on in a branch on github:

These warnings can be disabled with a configure switch, and are only fatal
(using "-Werror") if said switch is set to "error". The branch is not yet
complete.
