At $4,000, you might be better off selling the boat piecemeal. Sell the
sails, roller furler, bimini, etc, on ebay, and I'll bet you'll still
get $4,000 for the basic boat that's left. If all those goodies you
added don't really increase the value of the boat (which, unfortunately,
they don't), you might as well try it. It means a bit more work, but it
might be the only way to maximize your return.
I hate to think about what I've got tied up in my boat and to only be
able to get $4K to $5K for it makes me sick! Let's see, I paid $13,500
for it 3-1/2 years ago.
Custom built triple-axle trailer - $5600
New starboard bulkhead and table - $900
Harken roller furler - $1500
New headsail - $1500
New 9K BTU Mermaid marine AC - $2300
New bimini - $1200
Flat panel TV and DVD/stereo - $500
Self-tailing winches - $1200
And that's just the major stuff I can come up with right off the top of
my head. We just bought a Hunter Legend 37.5 back in November, and have
been toying with whether or not we should sell the Catalina. But after
reading this, we'll just keep her for now.

Just sold my 1978 C27 Outboard Standard rig for $4000. At that it took
me almost 2 months to find a buyer. Even in a huge sailboat
area(Florida) the market is beyond soft. My boat was very well
maitained with alot of recent work, but not perfect. I have 2 friends
that are dealers here and they basically said with the sailboat market
right now, if your not giving it away your not going to sell it.
I buy and sell boats and watercraft as a hobby and have for years. I
do probably 20-25 a year. This was my personal sailboat and I have
never tried to sell one. I can tell you selling a sailboat is by far
the worst selling experience I have had. If the boat isn't priced
right your gonna waste alot of your time showing it and get frustrated
with no offers or low ball ones. It's tough right now. Plan for an
extended period of time to sell. Like one of the other gentlemen said
at your price you are 3 times what similar boats are selling for. Good
Luck.
