You're in Oregon, right? Are you in the desert, the mountains or around Portland? The Portland area's climate is more like ours here than you might think. We get slightly higher temps in the summer, with a good bit more humidity, but the rest of the year, we're fairly similar. I do think we have fewer overcast days, but we still have our share. Our annual rainfall is pretty similar, despite the reputation Portland has for rain. I think we have more rain from downpours though, not as many misty days. If I lived where Wanda lives, I'd probably be dead ... or in prison! When Hurricane Hugo came through and we were without power for a week in late September 1988, I was surprised to realize how easily I could learn to bathe with about a quart of water, wash my short hair with about a pint of water. I was ok cooking on the grill. I could adjust to most of the perks that electricity brings. But, man, having no lights after about 7pm about killed me. We were looking at house plans for the house we live in now, and my must-have list totally changed. I have light hardwood floors, white woodwork, white cabinets, with lots of windows, with a small sunroom with skylights. Our previous house had fewer and smaller windows, dark hardwood floors and dark carpet! That was the first time I realized how light sensitive I really am. Karen Thomas, NC
