Hi,

Let me clarify it a little more for you

and a non-engineer doesn't have to. You can find a frontend to even the most
complex cli commands today. A non-engineer can use linux whole of his life
without even knowing about the console

Lets fast forward a few years to the future. Linux (desktop)market share is
~85%, windows is down to ~10%. All new pc/laptops come preinstalled with a
linux distro. A (non-engineer) businessman started using computers few monts
back(with linux). His long time windows user friends comes to visit him and
sees him using linux

Businessman: Hey how are you? Its been a long time
Friend: I'm good. thanks. I see you are using linux
Businessman: yes, I've to use computers for a few tasks at work
Friend: why don't you try windows. It looks much easier (to me). It would
just cost you a few hundred $. (And there is virus, and you need to upgrade
your hardware, and ...)
Businessman: You see, I don't use computers much. Just some trivial stuff.
why would I want to 'waste time learning a new thing'. And I get this os and
all upgrades free, why would I want to pay for an os. why would anybody?

This is the situation we all are vying for. I hope you see my point

If ubuntu want to do that, they should. I don't see a problem here. giving
away free cds, maintaining servers, paying developers/artists etc requires
money. what do you think is their stream of income. People like us who don't
want to pay will always get our downloads for free (as in fedora, redhat)
because major part of development documentation and support takes place by
community support. They cannot simply push us away.

why shouldn't they?

Just try to mail them, asking a free cd and mention that you won't be using
oracle. you just want to try the distro. I'm sure they would give you the cd
