Ok, I am continuously experimenting with the problem and have almost
concluded that it is a heating issue. I have kept the laptop in a
upright position (the bottom vents completely open) without running
any heavy processes like videos and it has been running for more than
an hour now, the longest it has run in the past few days. The
temperature remains around 36 - 37 C. On running any videos in that
upright position the temperature rises to 40 - 42 C. Even if I keep it
on the level surface, the temperature still rises because of closing
of the vents.

I drilled in to the logs and found something which might give a hint
to the problem. Everytime just before freezing, there's a message:
hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 15000 nsec

On googling a bit, I found that hpet is some kind of timer chip by
Intel and Microsoft and we can actually enable or disable it.

Can anyone throw some more light on this hpet?
