Look at /var/log/messages* .. The one called messages has logs since the computer booted (the presently booted system). I believe /var/log/messages.1 (and higher numbers) has logs from previous boots (the last, the second-last, and so on). HPET is a high-precision timer but I don't think that's the problem here. If you share a bigger chunk of your /var/log/messages (from the appropriate instance when it crashes), we might be able to identify where the problem is.
