Talking of backward compatibility of Win9x with DOS, have you read this book --
"Unauthorized Windows 95" by Andy
Schulman? It was published in 1994 by IDG Books (Indian edition by Pustak Mahal, Dec.
'94)....its a highly entertaining
and engrossing book (a bit dated now, and probably out-of-print as well) ...?? If you
haven't read the
book you should try it sometime :D
[ To enjoy the book properly, it helps to have a proper understanding of the x86 arch
& assembly language ]

I once heard this very funny story, don't know how far it is true....It is a
well-known fact that Dave Cutler, the
father Microsoft Windows - NT or WNT was the principal DEC VAX/VMS OS designer. And a
lot of people have the opinion
that the original codebase of NT had lifted large portions from VMS code. So, the
story goes that name "Windows NT"
was chosen to be the public version of the more "simple" WNT -- a name made up by
using the next letter in the alphabet
that came after each of the letters in VMS.
But seriously, talking of backward-compatibility, Windows users and developers are
likely to face a greater mess when
64-Windows comes out for IA-64 (Merced)...the 64-bit next generation chip to roll out
from Intel....The following URL
has an interesting article : http://www.idg.net/crd_microsoft_9-126553.html
Cheers,
