HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Manas and Amlan, you said it guys!!! :D Here is the best kept secret
of Linux-Interact '99 -- most
people (Linux users, ethusiasts and our members) who gathered for the after-seminar
chat agreed that Redhat reminds
most poeple of MS. That people should try Slackware ..yada, yada, yada.....so I was
rather surprised to see that none
before Amlan stood up for the Slackware.
Yes, Slackware was the first distro I used too, and loved it for its simplicity, one
of the best part is its simple
packaging as compared to the .rpm and .deb formats. I currently I prefer to use Debian
as I feel it gives me more
flexibility and power, and its more committed to the ideal of Free Software, has an
excellent bug-tracking system.
I understand Manas's anti-RHL stand, for any true Linux geek will definitely miss
getting the kick out of setting up a
difficult piece of h/w.... but does the Ram-Shyam-Jadu user give a damn about
installing h/w or drivers for it??...so
what to do if Linux is to be pushed to the desktop or outside the geek and power user
domain.....???
Incidentally, and perhaps not totally out of the point, Amlan has been carrying a line
in his signature "When one of us
would do something silly, stupid or just plain dumb
with our UNIX system, we would say "What a USER thing to do!"
Cheers,
--Indra.
PS. I have been getting some reports of a few new users (as in Linux, not computers)
coming to one of our monthly
meetings and then disappearing forever. The general comments from these folks have
been "Orre baba, they are too
techie!" ........

YES, YES, YES, Slackware is it. Amlan, you just said the thing
after my own heart. I've been using Slackware for about 4 years
now, and its bliss. Red Hat does remind me of (ugh!) Windows.
Its fabled "ease of use" is actually a ploy to rob the installer
of much of his/her freedom and if something goes wrong -- well
its probably the end of the installation.
