this *will not* break the system in any way .. i have been doing it on my
system since long and nothing has happened ... I know that the right way
to do it is using the update-rc program but as far as i know this program
also only creates links between /etc/init.d and /etc/rcX.d. so my method
of just renaming files in the particular runlevel works ... as it is u r
only renaming links to actual files in /etc/init.d ...and it will not make xdm/gdm 
unusable in any other runlevels because all
runlevels have their own links to /etc/init.d
