I would be inclined to agree with you on this point. As I mentioned
earlier on this thread, Linus had an enduring goal for Linux. He wanted
it to be a whole lot of fun. Which is why, when Linuxers get together,
the fun of hacking a kernel together, or racking ur head over getting
that damned game to work or playin' round with the latest Desktop
environment results in nothing but more fun... This may not be a primary
goal, but does go a long way in keeping LUGs together. The socializing
aspect is one that keeps current members in the thick of things, and
lets newbies and 'lurkers' feel interested. Agreed, Linux doesnt have
much of a social face....but the social face that the goals of this
group aims to achieve is quite different from the social face of other
proprietary platforms. Windows mailing lists are basically supposed to
be troubleshooting forums, whereas a LUG aims to spread the fun around.

A mailing list is fine and helps the active MEMBERS keep busy for 29
days a month. But that one meeting every month helps get the 'lurkers'
out of the shadows, give the newbies a little more experience and
finally let OUTSIDERS know what the LUG is all about and convince them
into becoming insiders. That way a LUG never ceases to exist/wither's
away.
