NASSCOM has played a leading role in ensuring quality of service, and
the enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in the Indian Software
industry.

Why not report them to Nasscom ?
Yes ,
I have thought about reporting them to NASSCOM / Microsoft .
But it's difficult
to take these giant corporations / banks to task singularly . The scale of
the problem is
huge . LIC for example has 2500 branch offices all over the country and
employs
100000 people , it's the company with The second largest number of PCs just
next to
Indian railways in this country . The managements are, as i said adamant and
don't take this "piracy thing" seriously . Some actually laughed when i told
them .
They DO NOT have any software audit , i fact they do not have any external
audits
AT ALL . The internal audit is basically a eyewash . So are these
nationalised banks .
My guess is if I report it to NASSCOM/MS they may take it up with
these PSU's
and reach some sort of shady understanding ( likely of Microsoft ) or the
PSU management
shall assure of full investigation into the matter and a few years later
issue a clean-chit
and probably victimise me for reporting them . Do not forget that for
Microsoft they are
buying SOME software and are big PROSPECTS , also they have Government
backing
and doubt NASSCOM or MS shall so much as STIR them !!!!
More than the occassional individual usage I am worried about
this trend in BIG
corporates . It takes a lot of wind out of the Linux point of view and
discourages
adopting Linux . Frankly speaking I have no idea why any newbie / business /
establishment
would use Linux if MS Windoze / Offce is for FREE with no fear of any
serious action .
It is also clear that major PC vendors like HP/Lenovo/Dell/HCL
are aware of this trend
and instead of fighting it are BUSY cashing in on it . Have you observed the
current offers
from them of P4 PCs with 64-bit technology and SATA hdd and 512Mb RAM and
pci-express
video cards and TV-tuners etc with only DOS installed and not even linux .
Who do you
think are going to use this config with FREEDOS ????!!!??? and for what ???
what are these companies suggesting that you install ?? why is that not
preinstalled ??
They are doing this in PCs/business-office PCs / Notebooks . I have seen
people buying
notebook-PCs from Compaq outlets in this city with free linux /DOS and the
shop assistants
installing pirated windows XP . office etc in the shop itself -- and giving
it to the customer .
When i confronted them the shopkeeper says " what can i do if the customer
does not
want linux and also want free windows ? " the customer said " it's the
Compaq people
who installed the software so i'm not responsible" !!!!
