Hi All,
*First - the rant:* I was driving by a Software Major's office today,
and saw a line of a few hundred youngsters waiting to get in for an
interview.
It is true that the software industry needs thousands of youngsters,
but as a nation we have millions of them.
Sadly everybody seems to have been boxed and packaged into one with the
engineering label. Some of these guys are artists, some are musicians, some
are accountants - by nature. But they wait in vain for a software job.
OTOH, we are a growing nation, which can use some help. We need better
mechanics, better construction workers, more artistic output. There are
opportunities everywhere - one could start a company that supplies road
traffic management personnel, and this would be in high demand.
We walk over slush, jump through gutters and enter a fancy office to
improve the lifes of humankind halfway around the globe, while our kids
suffer from diseases that could be prevented with sanitation improvements,
our parents struggle to cope up with the increasing cost of medical
facilities.
I can go on and on. Am sure each of you will have your stories to
share.
*Can we do this?*
Am wondering if we can provide counselling to these graduates and
realign them to solve some our nation's problems. I know its a tough
change, given the peer pressure we are under - we might even find some gems
to contribute to open source and get companies to sponsor them.
What do you all think? I would be really glad if some of you can spend
some time with me on exploring this.
Regards,
