This is a valid point. In a society where there is no social security net,
an individual will always strive to first achieve the most immediate needs
(food, clothing and shelter) first before striving for higher needs like
fulfilling his/her passions.

The question whether to go for engineering/arts/medicine/others is not
decided based on what the person wants to do, but rather on which field
promises the maximum income for the minimum resources/effort. Unfortunately
it is easier to tell these people to follow their passions but the economic
realities almost always takes them in a different direction.
