Although I believe you are correct about the stress it causes on the
filament, the whole idea of it taking more energy when the light bulb
is first turned on is an old wives tale.

When I was a kid, I used to spend hours when I was bored just turning
my bedroom light on and off. Sometimes quite rapidly. If what you
said was true, I'm sure my grandmother and uncle (whom I lived
with... my parents were seperated) would have said SOMETHING to me
about a horrendous power bill. They didn't.

My understanding is that a light bulb doesn't use a significant
amount of energy getting started, though it IS stressful on the
filament. That's why light bulbs tend to burn out most often when
they're just being turned on.

Personally, I tend to power down my iMac during the following
situations:

1. When the last person in the apartment at the time goes to bed
2. When the last person in the apartment leaves to go somewhere
3. When no one is going to be using the computer for eight hours or
more or
4. When I'm watching a movie.

The first three are pretty self explanatory. The reason I power it
down during #4, though, is that I have one of the original Revision B
iMacs that has the cooling fan. When I'm watching a movie, I power
down the computer so I won't have to hear that noise.

I don't have a full home theatre system, but I've got the VCR hooked
through the stereo amp with a VERY fine set of speakers (they used to
belong to my fiancee (we share them now :))... she has GREAT taste in
audio equipment... or rather her parents do... she got them as a gift
from them... :)). I don't like having the fan interfering with the
great sound I get from this system. (Living in an apartment, I can't
crank it up high enough to completely drown out the fon).

Personally, I really don't worry about stress on the equipment from
powering up and powering down. This is APPLE hardware, remember.
I've heard stories about the punishment Apple hardware can take that
border on the unbelievable. So I personally doubt that shutting it
off and letting it cool on a daily basis is going to hurt it
much... :)
