In all honesty, it's really more of a personal preference issue. I 
doubt that there's any way to really know if either method affects 
your machine in a positive or negative manner. It's just a matter of 
what works best for you.

I set my iMac to sleep after 20 minutes. I set my PowerBook never to 
go to sleep... I typically close the lid (thus, putting it to sleep) 
when I walk away, if I think I'll be gone for any appreciable amount 
of time.
