You are going to hear varying opinions on this.  I bought Applecare on 
my first iMac and it paid for itself after only one simple repair.  It 
was well worth the money for that but even if something had not gone 
wrong with my mac, I enjoyed the peace of mind and also the phone 
support which I found helpful on several occasions.

Finally, it is a great selling point - if you want to sell your Mac and 
have say 6 months to a year left of the Applecare plan, you can transfer 
it to the new owner and they can be assured that if anything major goes 
wrong, it will be covered.

I must agree that on most electronics I will not buy the extended 
warranty (i.e. DVD players, TV's etc).  On a Mac, it is worth the 
money - IMHO.
