I used to feel the same way you do. I'd previously had Macs where I'd bought
the Applecare and never needed service. So when we got our son his first iMac
(a rev B), I figured I'd pass on the AppleCare. Well, wouldn't you know it,
after about a year and a half of ownership, the processor card went. It cost
$78 just to have the machine evaluated (which would have counted toward the
repair, had we gone forward), because, of course, I didn't know right off
that it was the processor card. It would have cost about $350 for the new
part. We were already a couple of generations of iMacs down the road, so the
only reasonable conclusion was to get him a new machine instead of investing
that much in an older one (we got him a 450MHz machine to replace a 233MHz).
Obviously, if we'd had Applecare, we would have fixed the original machine. I
will never again get a machine and not get Applecare. And my goodness, it's
incredibly cheap on the iMac -- only $149. I myself can't understand why
Apple hasn't increased it for the new iMacs because of the LCD monitor. To
put this in perspective for you, I paid $149 for Applecare for my son's iMac,
$249 for my G4 tower, and a whopping $349 for my G4 PowerBook. Spend the $149.

And for those folks who have the new iMac -- right now there are very few
resellers who are authorized to work on the new iMacs, primarily because of
the thermal seal. In most cases, the repairs have to be done by Apple. If you
have Applecare, it will be either onsite, or they will provide for the
shipping of your machine.

Is it worth the extra $$$?

It has been my experience "in general" that

extended warranties are seldom worth

the money, especially with electronics. Usually

if something is going to break it happen in the

first few month and after 5+ years. And extending

a 1 year warranty an extra year or two is not

worth the money.

Is it significantly different with an iMac?
