I've bought applecare on every product and never been sorry. In most
cases, during the 3 years I've had some expensive repair--a logic board,
for instance, can take a big chunk out of your piggy bank where you were
saving for the *next* Mac. But displays are vulnerable and expensive,
esp. flat panel LCDs, it seems. Hard drives are no longer the "tanks"
they once were. I've seen too many that failed either quickly or longly
;^). Chips? Well, you're probably goiing to replace the lowend chips
that come with your Machine. 

I don't think the old formula you quote applies to the newer stuff.

However, if you know how to get spare parts and do your own repairs,
then you probably don't need applecare.
