I have been trying to do a software update for the past 3 days using my iMac's internal modem. The upgrade was 23 Mb, and things being the way they are, that translates to more than a 2 hour download. The problem has been that my modem disconnects before the download is finished - usually about half way though the process.
I tried using different telephone numbers in the hook up, per the options my ISP has available, thinking that surely one of them would have a bit less traffic, and would be less likely to cause a disconnect. Didn't work. Then I tried using the post-midnight download approach - same result. About halfway through, disconnect. In desperation, I bought an external modem (U.S. Robotics 56 K Faxmodem) with the idea that this device, having its own power supply, would be much more stable. On the box, it touted itself as being much faster and efficient than the computer's modem. Unfortunately, the blasted thing disconnected before the download was completed. I'm back to square one. I really don't want to commit to a DSL high speed connection - partly because I'm cheap, don't want to spend that much money every month, and partly because I simply don't require lengthy downloads of this sort very often. It doesn't seem worth the cost. So I'm looking and hoping for an alternate way to go. If anyone knows of a way to resolve my little dilemma, please be forthcoming. I will be very appreciative.
