Just for the record, I personally didn't make the leap to Mac OS X "just becuase it was new." OS 9 was the "new" thing once, too, yet when I made the leap to OS X, I was making it from 8.6. I never upgraded to 9 at all. I always recommend to anyone whose system can handle it to make the leap to OS X, not because it's new, but because it has some truly significant advantages over the Classic OS. To whit: 1. Protected memory. Applications can no longer screw up memory areas that belong to the system, bringing the whole computer down with them. Individual applications crash, but the operating system keeps on going, and going, and going... OS X could replace the Energizer bunny... :) 2. Dynamic memory management. Unlike the Classic Mac OS where each application had to be assigned a specific amount of memory to run within, OS X continually adjusts the memory requirements of all applications running in real time. Remember all those times you had to fiddle with the "Memory" settings of an application to keep it from crashing? Say bye-bye to THAT Flintstone-esque little joy... 3. Improved interface. Though this is a matter of personal opinion, I personally find the Mac OS X interface to be a significant improvement on the interface of the Classic Mac OS. I find it much easier to keep things organized under OS X than I ever did under Classic. There are other advantages, but those are the biggest ones. I didn't make the jump to OS 9 when it came out because it didn't really offer all that much that OS 8.6 didn't. OS X, OTOH, offered many substantial improvements that were well worth the upgrade price. I agree with your attitude to a degree. If it works for you, fine, keep using it. But it's always wise to keep an open mind about new things... :) John A.
