Yes, you should.
The transciever only connects to localtalk. Your iMac connects to 
ethernet. Localtalk and ethernet is the wiring. The protocol 
("network-language") is AppleTalk, which is also know as EtherTalk, 
when used on ethernet. A convertor will adapt the signals between 
localtalk and ethernet.
My favorite convertor is the Cayman Gatorbox, but I'm afraid it could 
be difficult (impossible ?) to find in Singapore. They are sometimes 
sold for approx. 20 USD on ebay.
