Hi Gerry,

I had the same questions when I first started using OS X. I think it
is primarily a matter of getting used to a new way of working with
windows. Now that I am familiar with window operation in OS X, I find
it much easier than OS 9. To answer your question, you can select "New
Finder Window" from the File menu and get a new window in which you can
navigate to where you need to be. One thing that makes window
navigation much easier in OS X is the "Computer", "Home", "Favorites"
and "Applications" buttons at the top of the window. These allow you
to get around quickly within the window.

If you want to open a file of a CD from within a program, select Open
from the File Menu. In the resulting dialog box, slide the window's
scroll bar all the way to the left and you should see your CD.

The learning curve can be frustrating but I have found it to be very
worthwhile. It might be worth keeping OS X around so you can work with
it in small steps while using OS 9 as your primary OS. Just a thought.

Incidentally, not that anyone asked, the following are two books that I
have found very useful in making the switch to X:

MAC OS X The Missing Manual
David Pogue
O'Reilly & Associates

Learning Unix for Mac OS X
Dave Taylor & Jerry Peek
O'Reilly & Associates

No affiliations with the above. I have just found them to be
excellent references. Hope this helps Gerry.

Jim
