From: Donald Keenan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I remember shopping for my first mac (my first home computer ever) when the pristine, snowy flat panels were just introduced. My eyes would bug out as I read all the adverts Apple is so good at putting out. It never mentioned the grease when they described the ease of opening the bottom up for upgrading the memory. Interesting fact.
I think a lot of people are getting confused.
All this talk about heat seals and thermal grease applies ONLY when attempting to upgrade the "non-user-upgradeable" RAM deep inside the flat panel iMac.
It does NOT repeat does NOT apply to the one "user-upgradeable" slot located on the bottom of the unit. That one ANYBODY can upgrade, and there's no need for anything fancy. It's a piece of cake. No grease, no seals, no muss no fuss.
Apple did NOT intend for customers to try upgrading the "non-user-upgradeable" slot, and that is why the common wisdom says that the max memory on the machine is 768MB instead of 1GB -- they mean that the most YOU can add to the machine is 512MB (to the 128 or 256MB chip that is already inside).
People like Kyle are trained to be able to perform the "internal" RAM upgrade and can handle it, but 99.9 percent of the iMac user base aren't and REALLY should not attempt it, particularly if their warranty is still in effect, since it is NOT easy, and the results of a botched install could be *disasterous.* If you really MUST upgrade your flat-panel iMac beyond 640/768MB of RAM, have a Apple-authorised tech do it.
