I am thinking about goin to OS X this fall. Probably after Panther is
released. How do you think it will run on this slot loaing G3 600 mHz with
640 MB RAM?
Should be great. I'm running Jag on a 700MHz G3 iMac and it doesn't feel at all sluggish to me. Yes, OS 9 is still a wee bit faster in Finder operations, but Classic seems to be faster for actual work (like Quark, Photoshop et al).
Your iMac won't be able to take advantage of ALL the speed that Panther offers, since you won't have Quartz Extreme available, but a friend of mine (a developer) who's running Panther Preview on his iBook says it is still WAY faster in Finder operations than Jag was, and faster overall. I asked him about comparing it to OS 9 and he said "OS9? THAT old thing? Never use it. It's dead, Jim."
He feels strongly that Panther is faster than OS 9, and (more importantly) that Jag and later make OS 9 look bad by being way more elegant, more stable, and more efficient.
