The B&W G3s have an ADB port so I wouldn't think it would be that. As far as serial ports go I could care less if they ever work since I no longer use them. I just can't see how a Rev A bondi iMac could run Panther but my beige G3s that are 100X better won't. I can't see Apple cutting support for the G3 all together in Panther since they are still selling iBooks with G3s in them. I guess in a way Panther is Apple's way of saying goodbye to there beige computing era.

As I made clear in my previous post, the reason that Beige hardware is being dropped is becuase of the 'Old World' rom and architecture. It's out of date and adds bloat to the OS X base Kernel that the whole OS could be (and apparently *IS*) faster without at the very base level. Apple use 'built in USB' as a convenient and more idiot proof identifier for New World machines as USB on-board was introduced at the same time. It has nothing to actually do with USB itself, or ADB support (which may still be there for the B&W G3 and i suspect it is still used in some laptops somewhere) or SCSI (can't drop support for SCSI devices as it's used in a lot of G4 Servers, High-End Video machines and custom X-Serve rigs). It's just like saying "you can tell your Land Rover Discovery has a 200Tdi, not a 300Tdi engine becuase it has plastic surrounds around the lights".

As for the guy from Apple suggesting a 1GHz G4 as an entry level machine for Panther i think he's talking cattle crap. Everyone I have asked, including those running it on sub-600MHz iBooks and iMacs have stated that it runs really fast, although one person said the Quicktime performance was diabolical on his 600MHz iBook.
