I am trying to understand why you are so convinced that the OS could not be
the cause of the freezes ?
Because I'm very hard on the OS, and have been running it since before the Public Beta (I'm an ADC Premier member). I run all kinds of experimental, half-finished, alpha and beta software on it all the time. I am MUCH harder on this OS than the typical user, and while I have seen a kernel panic or two over the years, I've NEVER seen the machine "freeze" as in become totally unresponsive (mouse won't move, no "spinning beachball", no response whatsoever) until the day I installed some bad RAM.
I'm wondering if it has ever been suggested to you to try to "telnet" into the machine (the Mac has to be set up for this in advance of course) from a different computer. This would enable you to "kill" processes that have failed but for some reason haven't exited, and it would establish whether or not the "core" of the OS (which is different than the UI service) is having problems or not.
In any event, I'm sorry you're having this odd experience with your Mac. While OS X can't boast to have eliminated all problems that might crop up, the normal user experience is for it to be -- by far -- the most stable and reliable OS a typical user has ever experienced.
Anyway, we'll see how things go from this point forward with my Mac. Can't
wait to get the G5 in a couple of weeks !!
What's fun about the G5 is not only is it a great machine (yes, I've been playing with em every chance I get), but the best is yet to come ... 10.3 and beyond. Panther will make a VERY big difference in performance for most Mac owners who can run it, dual-proc owners in particular. Just remember to take it easy on the third-party system add-ons till you're sure they have been updated for Panther.
