Mary,

Too late now I'm afraid :-(  Already ditched iChat AV and did an archive and
install. I am now using the original iChat and am having absolutely no
problems. 

I don't plan to try iChat AV again until it comes out with Panther. It just
caused too many problems. As soon as I trashed it, everything seemed to work
properly again.
