From: Mark Benson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I won't shy away from the fact I think the music industry overcharges for CDs
Well yes, but I think the retail industry overcharges for a lot of things. That doesn't give me the right to steal them. Please note that I'm not saying you do, I'm just saying I hear this as a rationalisation a lot. It makes no more sense to me than me going to a car lot and stealing a car because I think that the one I want is overpriced.
I do believe copying music many times to 10s or 100s of people without paying royalties is wrong.
Which is EXACTLY what a p2p network does, and THAT'S why the RIAA is so up-in-arms about it. When was the last time you heard about anyone getting busted for making a cassette comp for his friends? That's right, never.
I don't generally get asked for copies of stuff, but if I do I only let 1 person have a copy, if lots of people ask I say 'buy it'.
I don't copy albums directly, I feel like that's too much of a breach of copyright. It almost completely removes the incentive to buy it, which does the ARTIST a disservice.
I admit freely that I've made many a compilation tape (back when cassettes were the thing) and I occasionally make compilation CDs today, complete with artwork. Mostly to introduce people to an entire GENRE of music they are not familiar with, for example my Rock of Northern Europe compilation. While this is just as illegal as wholesale copying of the CD in a strict reading of the law, I think it's value as a publicity tool and a way to recruit people to buy the CDs of the artist they find interesting more than offsets any consequences of the law.
IOW, I make compilations for friends because I *want* them to buy the CDs. I think that's the mitigating factor.

"Apple is fighting three myths: one is that you pay a huge price premium; the second is that there is no software; and the third is that they are tremendously proprietary. The truth is, none of those things are accurate -- Apple is price competitive relative to their competitors; there is plenty of software for the tasks most individuals need to do and beyond; and Apple supports far more open standards than any other competing operating system. You combine that with a product like the G5, and you have to believe that lots of people are going to start taking a look at this -- if they can overcome their Apple prejudice." -- Michael Gartenberg, Jupiter Research
