at risk of stirring up yellowjackets, I forward this. This woman claims to "love" Macs, but gives all the arguments from years of exposure to MicroSerfs. I don't know if there are good and sufficient responses to this, so put it out for the Committee At Large, hoping you can provide some for this poor soul.
1) They're significantly more expensive. Tell me the last time you were
able to buy a brand new Mac for $400.
Why would I want one? I think if Apple has proven anything over the years, it is this:
1. Quality comes at a price.
2. A company needs to stay financially viable in order to best service their customers.
Hasn't this idiot noticed that $400 PCs need to be replaced MUCH more frequently? Hasn't she noticed that they tend to be pieces of ... er, crap? If Person A buys a Mac that they keep for five years, and Person B buys a $400 computer and replaces it with a slightly more expensive one (say $99 more each time) every year and a half, who pays more, Person A or Person B?
2) You can't just go out, buy new parts and easily replace them. It is a very expensive thing if it is possible.
This is a flat-out lie.
3) There's not a lot of software available for the Mac.
This is a flat-out lie. She means "There is not a lot of software available at Wal-Mart and the other white-trash places I tend to shop."
Nobody's asking them too, but the fact is that they will be "throwing out" their old computers again in about 2 years tops, so why not consider Macs AT THAT POINT?4) Windows may suck but a huge percentage of the users are businesses who can't afford to throw it all away to buy more expensive computers that won't work with their systems.
Also, where's her proof that Macs "won't work with their systems?" All the Macs I'm aware of actually play BETTER on Windows networks that actual PCs, and take a lot less time to hook up to the network. In addition, the time and money saved by them not being vulnerable to viruses and security threats saves many times over the initial cost of the machine compared to PCs, and that's BEFORE you get into their overall quality and reliability.
There isn't a ROI report that exists that says PCs offer a better value than Macs. Not one.
I would love to have one sitting on my desk next to my PC.
So do it. Don't be afraid -- they have Word and Solitaire for Macs now, and the porn and stolen MP3s play fine too. Twit.
