1. My HD is only a little over half full. While I expect to grow data within a year that will make the space tight, I'm nowhere near full yet.

So's mine - despite having my whole MP3 collection on it as well as 10GB of dead space waiting for me to install Panther.

2. My current drive is nice and quiet. I have had recent experience with noisy large capacity Maxtor and WD drives.

The drive in my iMac is a Seagate, they are VERY quiet. They're not the fastest drives on the market but who cares if you can't hear them for the competition!

3. I read an article in Aug 2003 Macworld magazine that carried a how-to for upgrading the HD in this model Mac and it clearly states on p62 that it WILL void the warranty. Dunno if its true or not, but I can't see tempting fate when I actually don't have a genuine need.

It *may* as there are parts in the FP iMac that supposedly require specialist replacement every time the case is cracked open, mostly to do with the heat piping that cools the G4. I dunno if any of that is effected by removing the base and the drives but I suspect the joint between the heat pipe and the aluminium inner case may have to be broken and re-made to open and shut the case. If not done properly this could lead to you smoking the G4.

A HD upgrade on the fp iMac is not a big deal, but it's not something you will find in the 'User Guide' (sorry no hard copy of the 'Getting Started Guide' is included with this model). I have the afore mentioned Macworld article and the service manual detailing the process. Warranty coverage is a funny thing and you never know what a service tech will say caused a problem. I'll wait until I have less to lose.

Wise choice.
