I think the Rev. A iMacs came with 8.1, the Rev. B iMacs with 8.5.  From
what I've heard, the USB support in 8.1 was extremely limited: enough to
make the keyboard and mouse work and that's about it.

If I was the original poster (and had a little money) I'd max out the RAM,
VRAM, and pick up an OS 9 CD.  If they still have 8.1 they probably still
have 32 MB of RAM too - Getting up to 256 MB and OS 9 would be like a whole
new computer.
