We have a 400MHz Grape that we installed a Western Digital 80GB-SE drive in....it helped performance and certainly quieted things down....less hard drive seeking sounds......I would also max out the RAM particularly if you decide to go to OS X....that will also give a performance boost and quiet things down as regards HD use.

We use 10.2.8 with zero problems

This link will walk you through the HD install:

Took about half hourish.....I would strongly reccomend a long magnetic screw driver for access to a couple of those nasty shield hold down screws.......I did it without and it went fine.....

I would go with the HD install for performance, etc....but if all you are after is storage and the idea of getting into the guts of your iMac are a bit intimidating....then the FWHD will work also......

I have an imac 400 mhz dv graphite, 128 ram. Would it be better to upgrade
the internal hard drive or add on a firewire hard drive? Also, I'm still
running OS 9 and would like to upgrade to 10. Any suggestions on what
exactly I should do and what I will need?
Thanks!
