I have an imac 400 mhz dv graphite, 128 ram. Would it be better to upgrade

exactly I should do and what I will need?
Thanks!

The inexpensive route is to change the internal HD. HD's are cheap and it's not a difficult job. If you are comfortable opening the iMac and working inside? It's a relatively simple job and requires no special tools.

If you want the security of external storage, plus the portability, then a Firewire drive is certainly a good choice. It will cost more, but it has advantages, especially from the back up standpoint. It's also great if you get a new iMac (Christmas is coming) to transfer your files to the new computer.

Neither one is a bad thing. Both are even better.
