Simple solution is just to click on the paperclip, select your file (making sure it has the extension). You can click on the "Windows friendly..." if you want, but for most files (for me anyway) it has been fine without.

If you just drag the file into the message then it will turn out a bunch of gibberish at the other end if it is a windows pc. I'm not sure why.

If you are clicking the paperclip and still getting the problem then I don't know, tried zipping it into a .zip file and sending it?

If the question has already been discussed, my apologies.

Since moving to Panther (I think it was OK under Jaguar, but I may be
mistaken), it has happened quite a few times that on sending Word files
in attachment while using Apple Mail.app, the person at the other
(Windoze) end has not been able to open the document.

The biggest single reason for Windows users not being able to read Word
files sent from a Mac is that the filename does not have .doc at the end.
They are helpless without it. If your files already have the extension, then
the quirks of Mail.app would be the likeliest reason.
