Well, the iMac should boot from the CD no matter how badly you mess up the
hard drive's system folder. Maybe there is something wrong with the drive,
or perhaps the university had installed some sort of security software to
prevent booting off CDs. I've seen software that claims to do this, but I
don't know how.

It's also possible that you don't have a bootable CD. Have you used it to
boot other computers?

You could also try holding down the space bar at startup, this should show
the Extensions Manager and allow you to disable the extension you added
before it loads. Again, maybe the university installed "security" software
that prevents these shortcuts from working?

As the extensions load, do you see any icons along the bottom of the screen
that look like they may be a security program?  If there is and you describe
the icon maybe someone will know what it is and how to disable it.
