Since you were trying to fix a cd rom problem to start with, you may
have a dead drive. i have had to replace 2 cdrom drives on our 266 imac.

Here's something that I found out recently, that not knowing caused a lot of grief. You guys may already know, that if you insert a CD and wind up ejecting it via the mechanical pin hole, the CD player will not read that disk or any other disk until you restart the computer, insert the CD and restart again. It could appear that the CD player is not functioning. I got this from a Mac tech bulletin and was able to make the right moves to install OS 9 to Jaguar without a further problem.
